This issue of Canadian Children’s Book News celebrates non-fiction. Author Rachel Poliquin, whose books for children explore forgotten body parts, bizarre sea creatures, animals and more, spoke with Krista Jorgensen about how her love of nature has led to her career as an author and how creativity is an integral part of her work. Book expert and educator Spencer Miller spoke with three talented illustrators—Suharu Ogawa, Julie McLaughlin and Belle Wuthrich—to get their take on what it is like illustrating non-fiction books versus fiction and what their research process entails. Rachel Seigel spoke with the author and illustrators of Groundwood’s ThinkCities series, which looks at how cities are being affected by climate change and population growth, to find out what it was like developing the series and having three different illustrators contribute. And, our Keep Your Eye On column introduces you to Salini Perera, whose colourful and inclusive illustrations have appeared in both fiction and non-fiction books.
